The first wave of tablets are coming this year. Most will be Intel Atom based running Windows XP, Windows 7, and hopefully some will have some variant of Linux. Linux will run much faster on the lower-powered CPUs and many distributions like Ubuntu Netbook Remix, Jolicloud, Chrome OS and even Android require only a fraction of the hard disk space and CPU power.
Where tablets will really shine is when the ARM based units start to surface. The Snapdragon and Nvidia Tegra 2 chips are comparable to, if not more powerful than, Apple's A4. The Tegra 2 looks really promising because it can deliver true HD video at 1080p in its sleep, and has a real Nvidia Geforce GPU incorporated in the processor.
